Exclusive Interview with Doc Daneeka

It's not common for an artist based in Wales to become the toast of underground music, but Doc Daneeka is just that. With releases on Ramp, Fabric, PTN, & Well Rounded in the bag, Doc Daneeka has started his own boutique label, Ten Thousand Yen, releasing other fresh artists like xxxy, Julio Bashmore as well as his own unique material. Bookings all around Europe at the end of last year solidified Doc Daneekas energetic DJ sets as one of the most sought after performances by clubs all around the world.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Doc Daneeka, shortly before his performance at Glow Nightclub on Friday 8th February.

You used to play in punk bands. What led you to electronic music?

I think just starting to go out, dancing with girls - that sort of thing! It seemed more fun than sweating jumping around with boys

What is the story behind your name?

It's from the book catch 22 - I dug it and used it!

How would you describe your music?

House and techno that sounds a bit like Jungle with a splash of soul

Which tracks would you suggest to people that are not yet familiar with your music?

My new EP on 2020:Vision and my collaborative album with Benjamin damage - they!live.

In January 2012 you released the album “They!Live” in collaboration withBenjamin Damage. What can you tell us about the album?

We were moved to Berlin to record it - it was a crazy time - we wrote it in 10 weeks, working 17 hours a day in the studio at the end - I'm very Happy with how it turned out

The vocals for your tracks “Tobyjug”, “Halo” and “Battleships” are by Abigail Wyles. How did you guys meet?

I met Abi through a friend, Johnny dub, who runs the excellent night Hoya:Hoya in Manchester

You founded you own record label “Ten Thousand Yen” in 2010. What made you do so and what can you tell us about it?

We had a lot of great music in our laps and we realized it was do-able - now we are very proud to release music that we Love in the way that we do

What are you currently working on?

Apart from my pot belly - I have solo releases coming this year as well as a side project called velodrome

On 8th February you will perform live at Glow Nightclub here in Bangkok. Will it be your Bangkok debut or have you played in Bangkok before? Are you excited?

I've only been to Bangkok airport - I'm really looking forward to experiencing the city!

Are you adventurous if it comes to food? Do you try the local dishes of the countries you travel to, or do you usually eat what you know from home? Will you give spicy Thai food a chance?

Absolutely - frog soup is the maddest thing I've eaten tho - can you top that? I'm sure you can, and I love Thai food!

What can Bangkok’s party people expect from your performance at Glow Nightclubon 8th February?

Lots of rhythms - house - techno and a good parteh!
