Exclusive Interview with Robert Babicz

Exclusive Interview with Robert Babicz

Robert’s musical output is inspiring and staggering. A true one-man operation, he writes, records and performs solo; commanding an ever-expanding touring schedule, tailoring the music he creates to the cities he visits. But that’s only part of the puzzle, Babicz's art is comprised of more than just his music. He films everything. Using his music to open doors and build relationships with people in only the way music can, he then records his experiences and interaction on film, both still and moving, later editing the images together as a picture track to his audio. Robert creates short films that capture the emotions, colours and feel of his trips, his music and the people he finds who want to be part of that experience. In turn these then also have an effect on his music colouring his emotive, unique take on electronica with a very human feel.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Robert Babicz, shortly before his performance at Glow Nightclub on 14th June.

How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place?

When the first house music came to germany, i was in love with this new sound. especially the acid house wave finally really got me on it. around 1991 i had my first time with some electronic instruments, and released my first record in 1992.

How would you describe your music in just a few words?

Deep eclectic emotional dance music, i just love music, and you can hear it in every second.

Between 1999 and 2010 you have released 5 artist albums and in 2011 a compilation album of some of your earlier tracks. Out of all tracks you have made, which tracks would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

Very hard question, maybe i would say REMOTE KISS.

In 2010 you founded your own record label BABICZSTYLE. Releasing on your own record label grants you more creative freedom, besides that what other pros and cons are appreciable?

An own label is like a own dimension, you can do whatever you want and when you want. so i am able to follow my vision outside of any trends, or selling needs.

What are you currently working on?

I just finished my new album, "the owl and the butterfly" and now i am doing remixes because i was not accepting anything before the album was done.

In January you celebrated your 40th birthday. Looking back on over 2 decades of producing music, what are your personal highlights or fondest memories?

Can't really put out 1-2 scenes because my life have so many extreme situations, i know one day i need to write a book about all the adventures that happen to me, and still are happening. and on the other side i try to live now, not really thinking about the past at all. its better for me to try learn and improve all my life.

What was the best and the worst gig you ever played?

A very good gig is when all people dance even the bartender, the not so good gig is when people don't really get into my music, but that is almost never happening.

What was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances?

Hmmmmmm to many :)

What are the essential things you need to have with you at all times and what are the things you miss when you are on tour?

I need my phone, and laptop of course. and i miss my family when i travel…

On 14th June you will make your Thailand debut and play live here in Bangkok at Glow Nightclub. Have you visited Thailand before? Are you excited to play here?

I am very exited, because i have been to Bangkok always only in transit, and i very love thai food. and to play in a country i never been is always very very cool.

Are you adventurous if it comes to food? Do you try the local dishes of the countries you travel to, or do you usually eat what you know from home? Will you give spicy Thai food a chance?

I always ask for local food, because its very interesting. i am very curios, and of course i look forward to get some spicy thai food…. the only thing is that i am a vegetarian, so no meat.

What can Bangkok expect of your performance at Glow Nightclub on 14th June?

I hope a night you will not forget, and i will take you on a journey far away…
