Exclusive Interview with Moonbootica

Exclusive Interview with Moonbootica

Kolour invites for the opening party of their new party concept "Sunn" - an 9-hour journey across 3 clubbing zones showcasing the best in local and international talent, with a focus on House & Techno music. The lineup will feature as special guest KoweSix (one half of the Moonbootica duo) from Germany.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with KoweSix of Moonbootica, shortly before his performance at Kolour’s "Sunn" launch party on June 20.

Moonbootica is a DJ & Production duo - consisting of KoweSix & tobitob - from Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany. You are working together since 1999, before that tobitob was widely known for his Hip Hop projects “Der Tobi & Das Bo” and “Fünf Sterne Deluxe” - the latter won the award COMET for best Hip Hop National. How did each of you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place, how did you meet and what made you team up?

We met in 1994 through Bo, Tobi’s former partner and became friends instantly. We always shared the same taste in music and ideas of life. So it was just a matter of time until we started to make music together. But it took an unexpected Dj gig in the end of 1999 to finally realize that we could do something great together. I guess it was 2002 when I quit all other jobs and concentrated just on music.

Your productions embrace all kinds of House music. How would you describe your music; what is distinct about your sound? Does the music you produce and the music you play in your live-sets differ?

You know this is a really difficult question since even we don’t really know how to name the type of music we’re doing. It’s always been in between the genres and most people would say we have a very special, a very own style of music. We always liked art, not just music btw, that would break boundaries or build bridges instead of just repeating and copying itself. So, to answer the question, our music is dance music, very vibrant, colorful and full of love and energy. More house than techno though.

This is as close as I can get.

Normally we play everything that we produce except the more laid back tracks that are especially done for our albums. We like the idea of doing albums that are not just 12 dance tracks mixed together so we would always combine our more energetic tracks with songs that you could also listen to on a Wednesday evening when you are lying in your bathtub.

Your most recent track is called “Work Your Body”. What other tracks would you recommend as an introduction for someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

Of course it is JUNE. I guess that’s our signature track. But also TONIGHT, ICONIC and MY LOVE.

Looking back on working together for over 15 years, what are your personal highlights; the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things ever occurred during any of your performances?

Actually there is no such thing like the best or the worst gig. It’s always bad when you get booked in clubs or on festivals where your sound doesn’t fit. That’s when the job gets really stressful and annoying because the crowd came for something different, something you simply can’t deliver. All other circumstances are absolutely manageable and it’s up to you to get the people and take them on a journey. We’re lucky that most of our gigs went really well and that after 15 years of continuous playing we still can’t get enough. Let me mention this one gig at Sensation White though where we played in front of 30,000 people and we were dressed in nothing but white bath robes. Never felt that free and glorious in my life…

What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife in Hamburg? Do you have any nightlife-related suggestions for first-time visitors?

To be honest we know every great thing about our beautiful city but the nightlife. Since we’re constantly gone on the weekends for years we simply don’t know. Of course everybody must visit the famous Reeperbahn which has been a nightlife and redlight district for centuries but when it comes to serious clubbing I would probably recommend that you visit Berlin. Besides that I can honestly say Hamburg is the most awesome city in Germany and you must come and visit it!!

On 20th June KoweSix will perform live in Bangkok as headliner of the launch party of Kolour’s new SUNN event series. Has any of you ever visited Thailand before? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of KoweSix’s performance?

No, never. And I can say I’m really thrilled. One night in Bangkok, a dream comes true. Of course many of our friends have visited Thailand and Bangkok and I heard many great stories. So you can expect the best from me. I’m going to bring some great tunes and we’ll all have a fantastic night together!
