Exclusive Interview with J'Adele

Exclusive Interview with J'Adele

A new talent for a new decade, this tech house princess is emerging from the ashes of a pop girl past of girl groups into a future of rocking tech house and progressive beats, J'adeles funky take on minimal and progressive sounds totally fresh. Having DJ'd around London as a resident for the rollover parties in 2010-11 and inspired by the tech and progressive scene J'adele began producing tracks featuring her amazing voice in 2011.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an Exclusive Interview with J'Adele, shortly before her performance at Glow Nightclub on Friday 1st February.

As part of a girl group you reached the finals of the casting show “Popstars”. What made you turn your back on that career and become a DJ?

This was a very long time ago when i was 20 and auditioning for the right group. I stumbled across Popstars advertisement in London and decided to give it a go without realising just how huge this show would be and become and never expected to get to the finals. Anyway i realised that "Pop" wasn't my style and the judges knew this when they interviewed me so I failed the interview. But to be honest, I was just so happy to get that far out of over 4,000 or so contestants!

In 2012 you won the "Made In Shoreditch" DJ Competition at XOYO London. What can you tell us about it?

Shoreditch in London is the place to go clubbing especially for the cool underground vibe, I love it. So I entered a competition advertised in Made In Shoreditch magazine by sending a mix, then got lots of votes which got me to the final showcase in XOYO, London, where I was a very privileged winner and became a resident.

You are a DJ and Producer, and – what makes you unique – you are also a singer/songwriter; your productions feature your own voice. How would you describe your music?

Well i am ultimately a singer and composer at heart, and influenced by many genres, grown up addicted to buying/listening to music.. i have a soulful edgy style to my voice, sometimes atmospheric/leftfield. My sound is quite deep and techy, house, techno infused with this vocal style. It makes people listen and dance with their hearts.

Which tracks of yours would you suggest to people that are not yet familiar with your music?

"Secrets" was my first release which got to the top 100 deep house charts. Also "Inside" which got to the top 20 tech charts on Traxsource.

Your mixes enjoy high popularity and are featured regularly on radio stations such as minimalstation, Proton Radio and Insomnia FM. How can people listen to your mixes?

On Soundcloud or minimalstation or Mixcloud.

Please tell us something about your year 2012. What were your highlights?

My first Ibiza tour was awesome for Celestial Recordings; playing live on the infamous Ibiza Global Radio and at Es Vive Ibiza Town as well as a boat party. Also being interviewed live on Lucky Life TV tested my interview skills! Winning a DJ competition for Made in Shoreditch. My show at Womb in Tokyo, and last but not least collaborating with top German producer Alex Flatner (Get Physical, Poker Flat) on an EP being released on Defected's Lo:Rise this Spring.

What was the best and the worst gig you ever played?

Best gig had to be in Womb, Tokyo and worst gig was probably my first in West London around 10 years ago simply due to the fact i was so nervous as it was my first!!

You travel a lot. What are the essential things you need to have with you at all times?

MacBook Pro (goes without saying really!), dj equipment/music, ipod, ear plugs, badgers balm (organic everything balm with lavender and lots of other yummy essential oils!)

You just toured Japan and played 2 gigs at the famous WOMB. How was it? Do you enjoy playing in Asia? How does the crowd differ from the western crowd?

Japan was very exciting and culturally interesting and diverse. I felt privileged to play in these venues as the sound systems and LED lighting is incredible and the crowds really appreciate modern sounds and have lots of energy to party. I had an amazing time there. Tokyo is so crazy in such a good way!

In Thailand you will play 7 gigs, in Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Samui and finally on 1st February at Glow Nightclub here in Bangkok. Is it your Bangkok Debut? Are you excited to play in Bangkok?

Indeed this is my Bangkok debut and playing at Glow is a perfect place to have my debut!

Do you usually try the local dishes of the countries you travel to? Will you give spicy Thai food a chance?

Always try the local dishes of everywhere i travel to. And yes, spicy food is always welcome in my tummy regardless of the consequences!

What can Bangkok’s party people expect from your performance at Glow Nightclub on 1st February?

Fresh underground electronic sounds with a set which builds to take them on a dancing journey throughout!
