Exclusive Interview with Thomas Gold

The German DJ & Producer THOMAS GOLD returns to Bangkok for another night of Electro- and Progressive House at LEVELS. He was ranked #82 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list in 2012 and has played at clubs and festivals all over the world – including Ultra, EDC, Coachella, Sensation, Tomorrowland and Creamfields. He is best known for his remix of Adele’s “Set Fire To Rain” – the tracks counts over 15 Millions views on YouTube by now.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Thomas Gold, shortly before his performance at Levels on 12th March.

You are a DJ & Producer from Germany that first emerged in the dance music scene in 2006 – only 6 years later, in 2012, you were ranked #82 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place and how did you get into DJing and music production?

I always had a passion for music and especially house music with all its genres. I learned to play keyboards at the age of 7 and I started making electronic music when I was 15. At this point I also made my first steps in djing at a friend’s house parties. from this point on I constantly worked on my skills, both for music production and for djing…

You play and produce House music, with a focus on Progressive- & Electro House. How would you describe your own music in just a few words?

Uplifting, energetic, emotional. I love big melodic breakdowns and punchy drops!

Your remix of Adele’s “Set Fire To Rain” was a huge worldwide success – the tracks counts over 15 Millions views on YouTube by now – and your track “Sing2Me” reached the #1 position in the Beatport charts. What other tracks, remixes or mix sets would you recommend as an introduction for someone that is not yet familiar with your sound?

You could check out my tracks 'Remember' (out on Axtone) or 'Colourblind' (Revealed) or still my older work like 'Marsch Marsch' and 'Miao'.

You have played at clubs and festivals all over the world – including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Coachella, Mysteryland, Sensation White, Tomorrowland and Creamfields. What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances?

Actually, there weren't any really "bad" gigs but I had a bunch of personal highlights. Playing Ultra Miami and EDC in Las Vegas were simply incredible experiences, also Tomorrowland is one of a kind. These stages are huge and the energy in the crowd is mindblowing. One of my funniest experiences was in Canada when this guy made his way on stage while I was playing. He then tried to crowd surf but when he jumped into the crowd people moved away and he fell on the ground - nothing happened, the guy was cool but we all had a big laugh and a drink after :-)

Your most recent Bangkok performance was in February 2014. On 12th March you will return to perform live in Bangkok – once again at Levels. Did you keep your previous Bangkok performance – and Thailand in general - in good memory? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance?

Oh yes, I had an amazing time in Bangkok last year! People are so nice, you feel very welcomed here. And the night at Levels was big fun, can't wait to be back on thursday. Expect a lot of fresh music, Thomas Gold personal edits and fun!
