Exclusive Interview with Milk & Sugar

Exclusive Interview with Milk & Sugar

Rise Productions brings the German House music duo MILK & SUGAR to KU DÉ TA Bangkok. They are best known for their tracks “Higher & Higher” and “Let The Sun Shine”. They have won the German and Italian DJ Award and received several golden records. Expect a night of House, Deep House, Nu Disco, Tech House and beyond!

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Milk & Sugar, shortly before their performance at KU DÉ TA Bangkok on 25th April.

You are a DJ & Production duo from Germany. You also run a record label together. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place, how did you meet and what made you team up?

We started both as DJ´s in our teen age, and then continued to play at several venues across our hometown Munich. We met at one of those parties by accident and quickly found out that we like the same kind of music. We started producing shortly after meeting for the first time, and the fact that we could not find a label for our style made us found our own company, which by now has already put out over 200 releases from ourselves, but also several other successful artists.

Your music is a mix of House, Deep House, Tech House and Nu Disco. How would you describe your music in a few words?

It´s just what we feel that sounds right to us. We are both DJs since almost 20 years, and our goal is to move the dancefloor. Our music is made for dancing, and honestly, sometimes it is hard to predict what will work in the club or not. But we have the chance to test our music in front of all different kind of audiences and venues, and this might be the reason for the sound we produce.

You are well known for your tracks “Higher & Higher”, “Let The Sun Shine” (the track reached #1 in the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart) and “Needin’ U” (with Barbara Tucker). What other tracks would you recommend as an introduction for someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

It´s always a good idea to listen to one of our compilations, such as our Miami Sessions 2015, that is out on iTunes since April. Also our radio shows that are broadcasted worldwide on several stations and the other releases from our label are a good start to get familiar with our style of music. Our new single “Bass” with Grammy Award winner Simon Harris is doing great in the clubs right now, it has a bit retro feel and is a fusion between House, Acid and Hip-Hop.

The list of artists you have produced remixes for is long and impressive, it includes Jamiroquai (Corner of the Earth), Janet Jackson (C'mon Get Up) and Usher (My Way). Can you point out some remixes that you are especially happy about?

Remixing Jamiroquai was quite a challenge. He wanted us to do a mix of his song “Corner Of The Earth”, which had a tempo of 90 Beats Per Minute – far away from the usual house around 125 BPM. We were fighting hard to mix these two tempos, but finally found a great solution for this problem. Jay Kay was happy and so were we!

Your latest studio album “House Nation” was released in 2013. What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?

House Nation was a collection of new productions and remixes from that year, but we found out that our followers either prefer our single releases or our compilations. So this was more a kind of a one-off concept. We are focussed on new single productions and compilations instead, like the “Miami Sessions” 2015. A different approach was also “15 Years Of Milk & Sugar”, which was a mixed “Best-Of”-Album and a big success.

Also in 2013 you released the album “15 Years of Milk & Sugar – One And A Half Decades”. Looking back on working together for over 15 years, what are your personal highlights; the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things ever occurred during any of your performances?

Oh, we played on many hundreds, if not thousands of events in our career, and there were a lot of highlights for sure. One of the most intense times was when we started playing our first residencies in Ibiza around the 2001/2002. We played as residents at Sunday At Space, but also had residencies in Germany set up every Saturday night. So most of the time it ended up that we jumped on a plane on Sunday morning somewhere in Germany right after our DJ set to fly to Ibiza and to start playing immediately after our arrival - and we were usually not getting to bed before Monday morning. Also playing in Sao Paulo/Brazil in front of fourty thousand people who were all singing our song was definitely one of our highlights.

You live in Munich - the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife there? Do you have any nightlife-related suggestions for first-time visitors?

Munich is definitely the most beautiful city of all in Germany and worth a visit any time of the year. You can probably catch us at one of our parties as residents at Pacha Munich, which is always a good place to stay for house music lovers.

On April 25 you will perform live in Bangkok at KU DÉ TA. Have you visited Thailand before? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your performance?

We heard a lot of good things about Bangkok and the club life, but we´ve never been there before. We are really curious to play, and we promise a great party with lots of fun and good music!
