Exclusive Interview with Lucas & Steve

Exclusive Interview with Lucas & Steve

Lucas & Steve are a House DJ and Production duo from the Netherlands, well known for their remix of Red Carpet's "Alright" which took the Beatport #1 chart spot for 3 consecutive weeks. They have joined forces in 2010, and now play all around the world, including major festivals, such as Sunburn, Creamfields, and Tomorrowland.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Lucas & Steve, shortly before their show at Levels on 28th September.

You are a House music DJ and producer duo from The Netherlands. How did each of you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place, how did you get into DJing and music production, how did you meet and what made you team up?

We’re from the Netherlands. And in the Netherlands it’s not difficult to get in touch with dance music. It’s been on the radio and television for as long as I can remember. We both started DJ-ing with vinyl and that’s where we bought our first dance records and started DJ-ing for our friends. We got to know each other around the year 2010 and that was also the year we decided to team up, because we had a personal and a musical chemistry as well.

You play and produce House music, ranging from Tech House, to Progressive House and Future House, always with a recognizable feel good vibe as your signature. How would you describe your own music, what is distinct about it?

We’re both really energetic and that’s exactly how we like our music. The music that we make and the music that we play. It’s usually about uplifting melodies that can carry you away combined with a great vibe.

You are well known for your remixes of Red Carpet's “Alright” (taking the Beatport #1 chart spot for 3 consecutive weeks) and Ruffneck's “Everybody Be Somebody” (residing in the Beatport Top 10 chart for over 5 months), as well as the track "Summer On You” (with Sam Feldt). What other tracks or remixes would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

We’ve released a lot tracks lately. Our track ‘Up till dawn’ is definitely a track we would recommend. It has an easy-listening radio mix and a really energetic club mix. Another track that we just released is a collaboration with Bassjackers, called ‘These Heights’ and another collaboration with Firebeatz ‘Show me Your Love’ is also pretty cool. These tracks may also be worth checking out. They’re all on Spotify and we even decided to give our collaboration with Firebeatz away for free as a big thank you to all of our fans.

What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?

We’re currently building up to the next releases and we’re touring a lot. We are going to the United States and Asia (also Thailand!! ☺) in September and October. But for now there is a lot of touring around Europe.

You have joined forces in 2010, now you play the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, including Sunburn (India), Creamfields (UK), and Tomorrowland (Belgium). What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things that occurred during your performances?

A couple of weeks ago we played at the Mainstage of Tomorrowland. That was a really incredible experience that we’ll never forget. The vibe and energy in the crowd was so amazing! Shows are usually not that horrible fortunately! Still, it can happen that some things go wrong and I remember a show in South-America where all the DJ- and audio-gear failed us. The whole right side of the speaker system shut off all of a sudden. The microphone did not work, monitor speakers where really overdriving and two cd-players went in emergency loop. I think that must be the worst show we’ve ever done, but of course that stuff can happen. Fortunately, that was a big exception!

Tomorrowland Belgium 2017 | Lucas & Steve

You are from Maastricht, a city in the southeast of The Netherlands. The city is known for its historical buildings and home to more national heritage sites than any other Dutch city outside Amsterdam. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife there? Do you have any nightlife related suggestions for first-time visitors?

Maastricht has a big venue called ‘Complex’ it’s really cool and has hosted a lot of big names already. We started DJ-ing together in a café called ‘Café van Bommel’. It’s a small dance bar but it feels like home to us. We still go there when we’re around (although that is pretty rare at the moment).

You will make your Thailand debut at Levels on September 28. Have you visited Thailand before? What can we expect of your upcoming performance?

It’s going to be our first time in Thailand. We’ve always wanted to visit Thailand, but we’ve never succeeded because we’re always touring. That is why it’s a relief that this time our tour leads us to Thailand. We’re really looking forward to it!
