MTV may be one of the most identifiable brands in the music industry, and for good reason. Throughout the years, MTV has been the driving force connecting artists to their fans globally. Artists were able to visually portray their music videos through the network’s shows and that allowed what were once local artists, to truly shine at a global level.

In 1984, MTV began to host the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in the USA in order to honor artists and music in pop culture. With the award-show’s growth in popularity, MTV expanded the show into Europe and the Europe Music Awards (EMAs) were born in 1994. Throughout the years, the EMAs attracted only artists from Europe, but with emerging talents from Asia making a raucous and more fans being open to new music from around the world, new categories were introduced - one of those being the Best Southeast Asian Act award which was first awarded in 2013.

This year on November 12th marks the first time that a total of 2 Thai nominees have made the final round. Slot Machine, the Thai rock band which currently consists of 4 members, Foet (Singer), Gak (Bass), Vit (Guitar), and Auto (Drum) are being nominated for a record fourth time and Pek Palitchoke the solo pop/R&B artist is being nominated for the first time for the much coveted Best Southeast Asian Act, at the MTV EMAs 2017 being held in London. It was Slot Machine’s newest song “Spin The World” music video and Pek Palitchoke’s “Sorry” music video that caught the eye of the MTV EMA judges.

Slot Machine

Almost 13 years after their debut album, 2017 has been a whirlwind year for Slot Machine to say the least. With 6 full albums already attributed to their name since 2004, release number 7 needed to be a special one - and special it was. The band created a huge buzz in the region by teaming up with Grammy Award winning producer, Steve Lillywhite, to release their first all-English album ‘Spin The World’. Although the language of their music may have changed, the band’s energy remains the exact same. Their English album has allowed them to go on a month long tour in North America as well as Korea and bring their brand of rock music to the world.

Peck Palitchoke

Peck Palitchoke broke into the entertainment scene in Thailand early on as a trainee under GMM Grammy. His career as a young star allowed him to explore multiple aspects of the entertainment business from hosting shows to singing - making him a very well-rounded entertainer. It however took him 7 years before he realized his potential as a solo artist, releasing his first single in 2005. Since then, 12 years later, he has released a total of 3 full solo albums and have been featured in multiple other hit singles. His breakout in 2017 was due to his very popular appearance on The Mask Singer Thailand where he reminded his fans of his musicality prowess behind the Kangaroo mask.
